WHEELING – An electrifying tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of all time, bridging multiple genres and generations, is headed to Waterfront Hall in Wheeling on Friday, April 3, with Shelter From the Storm – Celebrating the Music of Bob Dylan.
Music fans and Dylan devotees alike are discovering the power and poetry of Shelter From the Storm, a dynamic band dedicated to celebrating the timeless music of the legendary songwriter. With a deep respect for Dylan’s vast catalog and ever-evolving sound, the band delivers passionate performances that capture the spirit, storytelling and musical range that have defined Dylan’s career for more than six decades, but with the added benefit of great vocals and rich multi-part harmonies.
The Shelter From the Storm band, which is comprised of well-established musicians spanning several generations and genres — including indie, psychedelic, prog, Americana, jazz and blues — takes audiences on a journey through Dylan’s extraordinary body of work–from the poetic folk anthems of the early 1960s to the electrified revolution of the mid-’60s, the country and roots explorations of the ’70s, and the gritty Americana of his later years. Each performance blends faithful interpretations with the raw energy and spontaneity that have always been hallmarks of Dylan’s live shows, with set lists that change dramatically from night to night.
The band’s set lists feature beloved classics alongside deeper cuts, giving longtime fans and new listeners alike the chance to experience the full breadth of Dylan’s songwriting genius.
While Dylan, at 84 years old and still touring himself, has a singing voice that has become a somewhat polarizing force and acquired taste, the fact that every member of this band sings and harmonizes gives the music an extra lift that is perhaps more accessible for those who consider themselves more admirers of his songbook than his singing. Songs of protest, love, faith, rebellion and redemption come alive on stage, reminding audiences why Dylan’s music continues to resonate across generations … especially in these challenging “times that are a-changin’.”
Comprised of seasoned musicians with a shared passion for Dylan’s artistry, Shelter From the Storm approaches every show with authenticity and reverence while bringing their own musical chemistry to the stage. The songs are classics, while the performances are exciting and have a youthful energy. Their concerts celebrate not just the songs themselves, but the cultural impact and enduring influence of Dylan’s work.
Dylan’s music has gained popularity amongst younger audiences due to last year’s hit movie “A Complete Unknown,” starring Timothee Chalamet, which was nominated for 8 Academy Awards. Additionally, he is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the only songwriter to win a Nobel Prize (for literature), a Kennedy Center Honors Award and a Pulitzer Prize, his also is the winner of Academy, Golden Globe and 10 Grammy awards (including the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award). The Beatles cite him as a major influence in the development of their songwriting skills, and he has been an influence on countless other artists spanning generations. As such, his appeal crosses multiple generations, and enthusiastic fans of all ages typically attend shows by Shelter From the Storm.
The band brings its celebration of Bob Dylan’s music to Wheeling’s Waterfront Hall on Friday, April 3 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available online via Waterfront Hall’s website.
