Poker is perhaps the biggest casino table game there is and ever will be. However, with the huge number of players engaging in poker, many of them still make rookie mistakes that end up costing them alot. It is not all about calling and folding. 

The online poker market has been growing at a rapid rate, with the US leading the charge in the number of players. Out of the 100 million online poker players globally (according to recent data from the World Poker Tour), 60 million are in the United States alone. Chances are that if you live in the US, you know someone who plays poker online, or you have played poker at least once in your life. 

According to Custom Market Insights, in 2025, the global online poker market was valued at $6.27 billion and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.2% between 2025 and 2034 to reach $22.3 billion.

But how are these numbers relevant? It’s important to understand that even though the market is growing at such a dramatic pace, with millions of players joining in, people are still making the same mistakes. However, if you follow the pros, you’ll realize that there are different strategies they employ to make their gaming worthwhile. That’s what this article will be tackling. 

Skipping the basics

It doesn’t mean that because you have seen people playing then you can easily play it. The game might look simple on the surface but it’s a game built on layers of strategic depth. One of the biggest rookie blunders is failing to understand hand rankings, betting structure and game flow.

In one of her professional talks (being a top-ranked pro poker player), Maria Ho stated that she had seen players raise with hands that don’t even beat top pair because they didn’t know the rankings. This is not just risky, it is giving out free chips. 

Before you even start thinking about engaging in real-money games, understand how each hand works, the difference between No-Limit and Pot-Limit betting and what each betting round means. 

Another thing you should be sure of is the type of poker variation you are playing. The most popular poker game is Texas Hold’em, followed by Omaha and Seven Card Stud. In any case, there are many different variations of poker, meaning that before you go indulging in a real money poker tournament, you should know exactly which variant is in play and if you know how it is played.

Do not mismanage your bankroll

How you manage your bankroll will determine whether you will have a good gaming experience or not. While it is tempting to chase the big wins or move up your stakes when you are on a winning spree, pros will tell you that this is the first step to failing terribly.

In poker, variance is real. Even the best players sometimes go through extended periods of losing streaks. If you are not well prepared, then you will find yourself chasing losses and eating into money intended for other purposes. In an interview with Raquel Baldelomar, Maria Ho explains that it is important that you have a budget for your poker bankroll that will be different from a life bankroll. Ensure that the people around you do not keep worrying that you will eat into money intended for other purposes, especially when you are having a downswing.

Always treat your bankroll like a business budget. Once it is gone, it is gone, and the game is over. This separation helps players make more sane and less emotional decisions. As a rule of thumb, professionals live by the 1-5% bankroll rule. This is where you never risk more than 5% of your bankroll in a single session or tournament. For example, if your bankroll is $200, you shouldn’t get into a $50 tournament. Stick to cash games where the buy-in is $5-$10 max. 

For Multi-table tournaments, the variance is even more extreme. Here, some pros recommend risking 1% or even less per event. 

Playing on tilt or when distracted

In physical casinos, players are used to a slower pace, but online poker is more intense and faster. This leads to more emotional swings. One of the common rookie mistakes is playing while distracted, upset or tired. This is commonly referred to as playing “on tilt.” When you play in such a state, you are more likely to make poor, emotional decisions, which end up being your downfall.

When playing in your house, create an environment that simulates a live casino table. No TV, no multitasking, no playing under the influence. Treat it like a professional job, and you can be sure that you will not regret it.

Also, ensure that you are playing on the right platform. This ensures that you are operating on a site that is careful about your mental well-being. According to the UKGC, a good portion of complaints (at least 2000 complaints a year in 2024) were about delays to withdrawals. These end up distracting players, making them make irrational decisions when playing. Therefore, it is important that you find well-regulated platforms that mind you and your security as a player.
