Accused Repeat Sexual Abuser Waives Hearing

A Benwood man convicted of sexual abuse more than a decade ago faces new accusations of molesting children as young as 4 years old.

Thomas Glenn Hammerstone Jr., 35, of Benwood, was convicted in 2005 of one count of third-degree sexual abuse. He was in Marshall County Magistrate Court this week, where he waived his right to a preliminary hearing on new charges after two girls, ages 4 and 16, leveled new allegations against him earlier this year.

The 4-year-old, during interviews with Child Protective Services, said Hammerstone molested her last winter and threatened her to keep her from telling anyone, according to a criminal complaint. A medical examination performed at WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital revealed injuries consistent with sexual assault, the complaint states.

The abuse allegedly occurred at an apartment on Marshall Street in Benwood.

According to the complaint, a 16-year-old girl also reported receiving numerous inappropriate text messages from Hammerstone, which allegedly began in November 2016. She told police Hammerstone also sent lewd photos of himself to the teenager, while the 4-year-old girl reported seeing Hammerstone engaged in sexual activity with the 16-year-old girl on multiple occasions.

The teenager told police Hammerstone pulled her into the kitchen before sexually assaulting her, holding her in place and preventing he escape — and later threatening that “something bad will happen to you and everyone you love” if she told anyone, the complaint states.

Hammerstone’s ex-wife reportedly told police he asked her to wipe data off his phone, leading her to discover text messages between him and the 16-year-old.

In addition to his 2005 sexual abuse conviction, Hammerstone was convicted in 2012 of failure to register as a sex offender. He remains lodged at the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville in lieu of $700,000 bail. He faces charges including first- and second-degree sexual abuse, soliciting a minor, use of obscene matter with intent to seduce a minor and display of obscene material to a minor.

Public defender Brent Clyburn is representing Hammerstone.
