The Linsly School has said 23 of its students have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams.

Students took AP Exams in May. Included in the scholars were 12 from the now graduated class of 2018; 10 current seniors; and one current junior.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student’s performance on AP exams. Two students who graduated in the spring, earned the distinction of National AP Scholar. The designation is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of the exams. They are Ziqi Wang, who attends the University of Los Angeles, and Ketao Zhang, who goes to Johns Hopkins University.

Six Linsly students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of the exams. Five of those students were members of the class of 2018: Bojun Chen, at University of California Los Angeles; Hecong Wang, at University of Michigan; Ziqi Wang, at the University of California Los Angeles; Meilin Yang, at the University of Toronto; and Ketao Zhang. Current senior Xiaoya Wang also earned this distinction.

Five Linsly students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Current seniors who received the honor are Peihe Bin, Yiran Fan, Kaifeng Huo and Yunhan Lei. Also receiving distinction is current junior Jiaxuan Hu.

Twelve Linsly students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Examinations with grades of 3 or higher. Graduated seniors receiving this distinction are: Emma Camps, at the Savannah College of Art and Design; Andrew Gamble, at American University; Kelley McChesney, at the University of North Dakota; Mingyang Wang, at New York University; Lyndi Wen, at University of Washington; Sydney West, at Virginia Tech; and Haoteng Yang, at New York University. Current seniors who received the honor are Emma Augustine, Aidan Cummings, Caitlin Mead, Jonathan Milton and Sarah Munoru.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies — with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement or both — while still in high school. Through AP courses in 34 subjects, each culminating in a rigorous exam, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue — skills that prepare them for college and beyond. At Linsly, students have the opportunity to take AP courses in 13 different subject areas.

Of this year’s award recipients at Linsly, 10 were juniors at the time of the AP examinations and will have at least one more year in which to complete college-level work and possibly earn another AP Scholar Award.
