Sen. Mike Maroney’s Trial Set for April 14

Maroney

While Republican state Sen. Mike Maroney was in Charleston working on legislation Friday, his attorney was scheduling a trial date for him in Marshall County in his prostitution case.

Maroney’s trial date was set for April 14, with a pre-trial hearing set for April 7. Maroney faces a misdemeanor charge of soliciting prostitution in Glen Dale.

Maroney could not attend his hearing Friday morning at Marshall County Magistrate Court, where his attorney, Paul Harris, met with Prosecutor Rhonda Wade to set the trial date before Magistrate Tom Wood.

Wade said the matter would come to trial in April, and would not be continued again.

“This isn’t going to get continued,” she said. “This is going away one way or another.”

Maroney, 51, of Glen Dale, was arrested Aug. 28 and accused of sending numerous cell phone text messages to Cortnie Ann Clark to allegedly arrange sexual encounters on multiple occasions between May 14 and June 13.

Clark was arrested in June and charged with 42 counts of conspiracy, operating a house of ill fame/assignation and prostitution.

She has a pre-trial hearing set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday before Magistrate Mark Kerwood.

Several other men were charged, as well.

Maroney, who was charged with conspiracy, house of ill fame/assignation and soliciting prostitution, remains free on $4,500 bond.

In January, he returned to Charleston for the second week of the 2020 legislative session. Maroney was present during the legislative session Friday.

Neither Maroney nor Harris were able to be reached for comment Friday.
