Relay for Life Kickoff Celebration Set for Monday

WHEELING - The American Cancer Society is inviting all Ohio County residents to an event from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Oglebay Institute Stifel Fine Arts Center on National Road in Wheeling to mark 28 years of Relay for Life.
"Instead of the usual meeting setting, we chose to offer the people a chance to tour a lovely historic home in Wheeling while getting the information they need for our Relay for Life event," said Sarah Martin, event lead volunteer. "It will be in an open house format, so people can come through anytime between 6-8 p.m., pick up the important relay information and get a little something to eat and drink, participate in activities and maybe even win a prize as they move through the house."
This year's Relay for Life event will be held Aug. 14 at Wheeling Park's Good Lake.
The Relay for Life of Ohio County is an opportunity to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Since 1985, Relay for Life events have raised nearly $6.5 billion for the American Cancer Society.
"People may ask where that money goes, and it is a fair question," Martin said. "Funds raised at Relay for Life events help the ACS fund and conduct breakthrough research, and give cancer patients and their families the resources they need, like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline (at 800-227-2345) for answers and support."

"Relay for Life offers a way to take action against the disease for every single person affected," said event spokeswoman Peggy Dolan. "We are inviting the whole community to take part in this kickoff celebration. You don't have to need the American Cancer Society to attend this event. Come enjoy the tea, visit the home, and get to know who we are."
