WHEELING - Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger this week named Police Cpl. Jason Hupp the department's 2019 Officer of the Year.
A previous recipient of the department's Officer of the Year award in 2016, Hupp has been an employee of the Wheeling Police Department for the past seven years. Presently, he is assigned to the K-9 unit working with his police dog, Zero.
"Corporal Hupp is an outstanding asset to the Wheeling Police Department," Schwertfeger said. "In my nearly 30 years serving in law enforcement, he is truly one of the best cops I have ever had the privilege to serve with. His drive is unprecedented, he produces results no matter what he is involved in, and is the consummate team player."
During the selection process, commanders who nominated Hupp noted his passion and willingness to help people, as well as his dedication to the department and citizens of Wheeling. Hupp also is a team player and is willing to take the extra step, commanders noted.
"Jason is adored by his superiors and subordinates alike, however, what I like the most about Jason is his consistency and the fact he is a good person," Schwertfeger said.
First implemented by the Wheeling Police Department in 2015, the Officer of the Year award is designed to properly recognize the efforts of the officers within the police department. Every three months at a command staff meeting, nominations are received for the Officer of the Quarter.
Each nominee, including the winner of that award, is then eligible to receive the Officer of the Year award.
Criteria that qualifies an officer consists of solid work ethic and productivity, contributions toward achieving initiatives found on the department's strategic plan, leadership and mentoring young officers and reflecting the Wheeling Police Department's core values daily, Schwertfeger said.
During Tuesday's Wheeling City Council Meeting, City Manager Robert Herron noted there will be a ceremony later in the year honoring Hupp as Police Officer of the Year.
"There's a very extensive process the police department goes through to determine who the Police Officer of the Year is," Herron said. "This is the second time that Jason has been awarded this prestigious award. So congratulations -- and thank-you -- to him. At some point in time, I'm sure he will be recognized not only by the police department, but also by the city as a whole."
