Martins Ferry Man Dies in Vehicle Crash

By ROBERT A. DEFRANK 1 min read

YORKVILLE - A Martins Ferry man died in a single-vehicle crash on Belmont County Road 2 on Wednesday morning.

Gary E. Miller Jr., 54, was traveling east in an SUV about 10 a.m. and apparently went off the right side of the roadway and overturned into a small creek, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Miller was not wearing a safety belt, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Belmont County Coroner's Office. Members of the Yorkville Volunteer Fire Department and EMS assisted at the scene.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the case. The crash remains under investigation.

Joe Gillespie, whose home overlooks the creek, pointed out the accident scene Wednesday afternoon.

"I was at work. My neighbor came down and sent (a picture) to me," he said and indicated the vehicle's likely path to the creek. "You see his tracks."

Gillespie said the section of County Road 2, Deep Run Road, poses a hazard for drivers.

"There ain't no guardrail here. This whole run is a deathtrap," he said. "Up the road, there's been vehicles in the creek."
