Ohio Valley Mall Unveils ‘The Place We Call Home’ Mural

Belmont County Tourism partnered with the Wheeling/Ohio County WV Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Ohio Valley Mall to create a large mural for residents to enjoy inside the mall.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Two local tourism organizations unveiled a new historical timeline mural for all to enjoy at the Ohio Valley Mall.

Belmont County Tourism partnered with the Wheeling/Ohio County WV Convention & Visitors Bureau and the mall to create a large mural for residents to enjoy inside the mall. The “Ohio Valley Treasures, The Place We Call Home” mural was unveiled Wednesday morning.

Barbara Ballint, executive director of Belmont County Tourism, said the mural represents the upper Ohio Valley and why it is such a nice area to live and visit.

“Since it’s the Ohio Valley Mall we thought it would be a good idea to collaborate with the Wheeling/Ohio County CVB. … It (the mural) truly does represent the upper Ohio Valley and important landmarks of the upper Ohio Valley,” she said.

Ballint said the project has been in the works for about a year. Due to COVID-19 the project was temporarily put on hold and resumed upon the mall’s reopening.

The mural includes photographs of historic landmarks throughout the valley with dates of when they were formed and bios of each. There are a total of 20 local landmarks depicted in the approximately 45-foot-mural. The timeline begins in 1807 with a photograph of the Black Horse Inn in Morristown and ends in 2002 with a photograph of the Oglebay estate in Wheeling.

“We truly have the entire Ohio Valley represented,” Ballint said. “It’s a great timeline showing the history of the upper Ohio Valley and some very important landmarks that some people are unaware of even. We’re extremely proud of it.”

Candi Noble-Greathouse, mall marketing director, said the mural is a great addition to the mall.

“It’s a beautiful mural. We know our shoppers are going to check it out. We know our walkers are loving it,” she said.

The mural is displayed on the hallway inside the Ulta Beauty entrance next to the former Sears department store.
