Three Appointed to Arts and Cultural Commission in Moundsville

Moundsville City Council met in person Tuesday night. Audience space was limited to every fourth seat, while council members were seated further apart at their round table.

MOUNDSVILLE – Moundsville’s city leaders have selected three residents to join them on the city’s new Arts and Culture Commission.

The city council approved the appointments Kathy Fox, Nick Healy and Joy VanScyoc during its Tuesday night meeting. They will join council members Breanna Hickman and Sara Wood on the commission, which is focused on promoting Moundsville’s cultural identity.

The commission was established in May, replacing the Arts and Culture Committee, which consisted only of council members with volunteer assistance from residents.

Healy was appointed to a six-year term, Fox to a four-year term and VanScyoc to a two-year term. VanScyoc is a teacher at Moundsville Middle School, Wood said, while Fox and Healy have been longtime volunteers with the committee.

“All three will be great applicants,” Wood said.

Fox, Healy and VanScyoc were the only three applicants to the commission, though Wood added that the commission was always eager to accept volunteer assistance from any interested person within the community.

Before the meeting, City Manager Rick Healy said that in its first year, the Arts and Culture Committee was highly successful in their efforts to promote events around town, and their work continues in 2020 despite COVID-19.

“They had a really successful 2019, with five events they held throughout the year, and looked forward to a great 2020,” Healy said. “Of course, we all know that with COVID, that all got slowed down, and all their events to this point have been cancelled. We decided, in the interim, to make that into a commission with the city. … They’re fostering the arts and events in the city. … They were all free, family-oriented events to promote the artists in the community, and get the people out as well.”
