Driver Leads Police on Chase From Marshall County Into Ohio

By ROBERT A. DEFRANK 2 min read

POWHATAN POINT - A man in an alleged stolen car reportedly led law enforcement on a chase from West Virginia to Ohio before being caught.

Chief Deputy Bill Helms of the Marshall County Sheriff's Office said the incident began late Monday.

"One of our deputies on routine patrol saw a...Nissan Pathfinder on Route 2. There was no license plate on it, so he stopped the vehicle," Helms said.

The deputy reportedly spoke to the driver, Matthew Snyder, 40, of Minerva, Ohio, and ran the information. Meanwhile, two other deputies stopped to see if they could aid and began interviewing Snyder.

Helms said the car was allegedly stolen.

"They wanted him to shut his vehicle off and step out. He won't shut it off. They reach in to shut it off for him, at which point he puts in gear and takes off," Helms said.

He added the vehicle "bumped" a deputy, causing minor injuries.

"He takes off south on Route 2, crosses over the Moundsville bridge into Ohio. Ohio Highway Patrol picks up the chase," Helms said.

"It was a slow-speed chase for a while through ... Powhatan," he said.

Near Jacobsburg he said the patrol executed a pursuit intervention technique of bumping a vehicle's rear and causing it to spin.

"He crashes the vehicle. He sustains some injuries. He was taken to Wheeling (Hospital)," Helms said, adding Snyder is charged with unlawful assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing, and grand larceny.

Helms said he believes Snyder suffered a broken leg in the crash.
