MARTINS FERRY - Police in Martins Ferry have charged an Ohio man with robbery in connection with an armed heist at a store in the city last week.
Ivan L. Smith, 40, of Canton, was charged Tuesday and accused of being involved in the armed robbery at the Dollar General store late Thursday, Martins Ferry police Chief John McFarland said.
Smith is currently being held without bond at the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville after Wheeling police arrested him Friday and charged him in connection with a separate robbery and assault of a man Thursday afternoon in North Wheeling.
McFarland previously said a man walked into the Dollar General store at 1210 Broadway St. in Martins Ferry shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday and pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded the cash drawer. The person then left in a white sedan with two other people inside.
The vehicle was later involved in a police chase through Wheeling late Thursday, although Smith was not in the car the time. The driver of the vehicle, Michael Blackmon, 38, of Cleveland, was charged with fleeing, while a female passenger has not been identified. Polixe are investigating whether those two people were involved in the assault and robbery in Wheeling and the armed robbery in Martins Ferry.
It was not immediately known if more charges will be filed.
