Ohio Man Charged in North Wheeling Assault, Robbery
WHEELING – Wheeling police have charged one of the people they think was involved in Thursday afternoon’s assault and robbery of a man in North Wheeling.
Ivan Smith, 40 of Canton, Ohio, was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree robbery, police said.
Police previously said a man was robbed about noon Thursday on Fifth Street when a driver pulled up to him and showed a gun. A man and woman who were passengers in the vehicle got out and assaulted the man, before stealing his wallet, police said.
Smith’s arrest Friday was hours after a police chase through Wheeling involving a similar vehicle used in the assault and a Thursday night robbery at a store in Martins Ferry. The driver of that car, Michael Blackmon, 38, of Cleveland, was charged with fleeing following the chase late Thursday. A female passenger in the car has not been identified.
Sources said police are investigating whether Smith was also involved in Thursday night’s robbery of a store in Martins Ferry.
Smith is being held without bond at the Northern Regional Jail. More charges are possible, police said.
