Wheeling Woman Charged After Alleged Pummeling

WHEELING – A woman was charged with savagely beating another woman, allegedly punching the victim nearly two dozen times while her daughter reportedly recorded the attack..

At about 3:40 p.m. July 26, Wheeling police responded to a Virginia Street business, where an assault had just been reported. At the restaurant, police say a woman was found holding an ice pack to her bleeding face, her eye swollen shut from a fresh bruise. The woman said Rhondine Bennett, 38 of Wheeling, had attacked her as she left work, while her daughter stood by and recorded the attack. They then left the scene in a white Chrysler.

Video footage from the restaurant allegedly shows Bennett exit a car matching the description across the street once the victim leaves the building. Police say Bennett is seen on video first grabbing the woman by the hair and punching her over a dozen times. Bennett follows this by dropping her to the ground and continuing to beat the woman. Bennett’s daughter is seen filming the attack on a cell phone.

Police said they were able to later obtain the footage from the phone, which showed the attack more clearly. At one point during the beating, someone is heard to yell, “Stop, Rhondine!” Rhondine is allegedly heard to get close to the woman, claiming several times that she’ll kill her, along with several insults.

An investigator with the Ohio County Prosecutor’s Office said the victim required surgery to her nose in the aftermath of the attack.

Bennett was arrested last week and is charged with malicious wounding, a felony. She posted a $2,000 bond from the Northern Regional Jail. Her preliminary hearing before Magistrate Janine Varner is set for 10 a.m. Aug. 24. As of Tuesday, charges against the daughter had not been filed.

In an unrelated matter, police also arrested Micheal Coppa, 55, of Wheeling, on charges of daytime burglary. Coppa allegedly kicked in the door of a Richland Avenue residence, the home of his ex-girlfriend.

According to the woman, Coppa came to the residence and demanded entry, and when she refused, he kicked the door in, breaking off part of the door frame. Security camera footage shows a man kicking on the front door, saying he had food. When she declines and tells Coppa to leave, he is allegedly seen yelling death threats and advising that she call the police, which she does. Coppa is then seen kicking the door open and entering. The homeowner said she feared for her safety.

Coppa told police that he did kick open the door, but claims it was because he heard the woman screaming for help.

Coppa was arrested and posted $10,000 bond. His preliminary hearing before Varner is set for 11:45 a.m. Thursday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
