WHEELING -- Anyone wanting to purchase their own fire truck might just be in luck later this month.

The city of Wheeling is auctioning off one of its fire trucks, as well as an ambulance, garbage truck, street sweeper, police cars and many other vehicles and items no longer needed by the city.

The live, open-air auction is set to happen at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at the city's Operations Center in Claytor, with inspection of items to begin at 9 a.m.

Those not able to attend the auction in person may still participate at frioauctions.com.

Auctioneer Jim Frio said the items up for auction, if purchased by the same municipality, would enable that municipality to set up public operations in their town.

He also commended the city of Wheeling for the diligent maintenance of vehicles.

“The service here is excellent,” Frio said. “They go over it before the auction to make sure the vehicle is safe, and that everything has been inspected.

“If they do see a problem, we sell the item for parts.”

The largest vehicle for sale is a 1987 Sutphen fire truck with 101,500 miles on its speedometer.

Also available for sale is a 2002 ambulance driven 128,278 miles; a 1992 diesel-powered GMC flatbed truck with 78,000 miles; and a 2012 Dodge Charger police cruiser with 102,572 miles.
