WVNCC: Former Straub Lot Ready For Paving After 19 Tanks Removed

WHEELING - West Virginia Northern Community College is making plans to place asphalt at the site of the former Straub Honda Parking lot now that a major excavation project is completed there.
A total of 19 abandoned tanks -- including nine fuel tanks and 10 lubricating oil tanks -- were removed from the property at the corner of Main and 16th streets during work there this summer. About 4,100 tons of contaminated soil was removed.
The property previously was owned by the Ohio County Development Authority, and Ohio County commissioners turned it over to WVNCC after the lot was dug up and refilled with dirt.
It is now ready for asphalt, and WVNCC has selected Savage Construction Co. of Wheeling to pave the lot, according to David Barnhart, director of marketing and public relations at WVNCC.
“They are currently doing surveying now and the company should be mobilizing in that space soon,” he said. “The hope is to have it paved before the colder weather sets in.”
WVNCC hopes to combine this project with one to place new asphalt on the 18th Street areas it has acquired behind the B&O Building.
The former Straub Lot was closed nearly two years ago after subsidence was discovered there.
Early this year, commissioners agreed to remediate the lot, fill it in, level it off, then turn it over to WVNCC. The college’s Industrial Technology Center is located in the former Straub Honda building.
