During a brief city council meeting last week, Moundsville's city leaders threw their weight behind an initiative to support local restaurants.
Council met Monday in a 33-minute meeting on Zoom to address the few matters brought before it. One was a resolution to endorse Support Local Restaurants Day on Nov. 18, an initiative to get locals to patronize locally owned restaurants, which have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
City Manager Rick Healy said he was gladdened to see the city support the initiative, as restaurants continue to deal with restrictions on capacity, spacing and indoor dining options.
"While this has been a difficult time for all of our businesses, restaurants continue to especially struggle, still limited to 50 percent capacity," Healy said. "Restaurants make their money by turning tables, and that's extremely difficult being at half capacity. Please continue to support all our local establishments, shops and restaurants as we continue to suffer from the effects of COVID."
The council agreed in a 6-0 vote to support the initiative. Council member Judy Hunt was not present.
Support Local Restaurants Day was put forth by the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce in hopes of boosting engagement with the eateries. The Chamber also advised patrons to purchase gift cards for friends and future use, which bolster sales and, by design, encourage repeat customers.
Chamber Executive Director Scott Reager said he had asked municipalities across Marshall County to join in the initiative.
"We're trying to push out the message to dine in, order out, order delivery on November 18," Reager said.
