WHEELING – A new addition at Our Lady of Peace School brings with it an expanded preschool program.

For decades the Catholic school in Marshall County that sits in the Mt. Olivet section of Wheeling has had a waiting list for its preschool program. Due to lack of space and strict teacher-to-student ratios implemented by the school for individual student success, Principal Maureen Kerr and her predecessor C’Ann Reilly, were not able to accommodate additional students or a full-day program.

Thanks to the addition of a PK4 classroom and the Battaglino Family Center, the school will welcome full-day preschool programs for both 3- and 4-year-olds for the 2021-2022 school year.

“This additional space is a dream that has become a reality thanks to a lot of prayer, hard work, determination, and local support,” Kerr said. “Our mission and vision are built on our foundation of faith. It may have taken a while to get to this point, but we are so impressed with the outcome and are certain the community will be too.”

The building is a sign of “great growth despite the unwanted challenges and setbacks of our current time,” she said. The addition further enables the school to emphasize their exceptional programs.

“Our preschool provides an environment for children to explore, gain a sense of self, play with peers, and build self- confidence,” Kerr said. “Overall, it is our goal to begin a love of life-long learning in each of our students. It is imperative for us to continue to nurture caring, capable and responsible future community leaders.”

Kerr is currently taking reservations for an Early Childhood open house set for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28. Space is limited due to COVID-19 restrictions. An overview of the school curriculum, programs, and preschool staff will be presented. Those unable to attend or are not comfortable to attend may call the school at 304-242-1383 to set up a virtual meeting.
