The body of an unidentified man was pulled from the Ohio River Thursday morning after being spotted by a pedestrian on the Wheeling Suspension Bridge.

Police say the Ohio County 911 Center received a call at 9:45 a.m. from a passerby, who reported the body on the shoreline of the river. The Wheeling Fire Department assisted police in recovery and investigation.

The man’s remains were sent to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston for a positive identification, a process that could take days or weeks according to police.

Wheeling police detectives will work to determine a manner and cause of death.

According to bystanders at the nearby Wheeling Inn, the man reportedly was seen wearing either a life vest or a red bag across his shoulders.
