A Local Favorite: Bob’s Lunch in Moundsville

MOUNDSVILLE -- Bob's Lunch has been a local favorite eatery for decades, and though owners and staff come and go, the customers keep coming back.
Owner Gary Workman has headed the restaurant for around 15 years in total, and is preparing to pass the torch to a new owner this May. Now 65, Workman said he's ready to retire and travel, having worked full-time his whole life. Over his time managing the restaurant, he's tried to learn how to manage customer expectations.
"Any time you run a business, it's not easy. You can't make everybody happy. You just try your best, work with what you got," he said. "Employees come and go, and it's difficult. ... I try hard, but it's not easy. I'll be 65 in May, and it's time for me to retire. I had a full-time job before this, I retired from there. I got two or three people interested, and as soon as one of them gets it, I'll retire and do some traveling."
The restaurant opened in 1947, originally on Jefferson Avenue, before moving to its current home on Third Street.
Workman had a difficult time picking a favorite dish from the restaurant, which offers American diner-style fare. When asked what his favorite was, his first few thoughts tended toward steak — the super steak hoagie and the baked steak, he said, were phenomenal.
The week's specials stay constant, he said -- creamed chicken over biscuits on Monday, city chicken on Tuesday, chicken parmesan and lasagna on Wednesday, which is Italian night, baked steak and mashed potatoes Thursday, and homemade noodles with Coleman's fish on Friday. They mix it up a bit on weekends, with the daily specials not nailed down.
"It's just a hometown restaurant, it's been here for years," Workman said. "… It's full-menu — breakfast, lunch and dinner. We've got good food, the prices are reasonable, it's clean, and it's friendly."
