WHEELING -- Four-legged canine friends and their owners are welcoming the reopening of a Wheeling dog park that allows those pooches to get some exercise.
The Fitzsimmons Family Dog Park, located at the Tunnel Green Recreation Complex, reopened to the public on Friday following a seasonal closure. The dog park will be open daily from dawn until dusk.
Park patrons and their canine companions will notice some improvements made while the facility was closed. City of Wheeling Public Works Director Russell Jebbia said the drinking water spigots were modified and drainage was improved.
Crews also removed a dead tree, fertilized the grass, added 200 cubic yards of wood chips and cleaned up around the perimeter of the park. Jebbia noted work on park improvements will continue.
The Ohio Valley's first dog park is divided into two sections, one for large breeds and one for small breeds. Each section features its own water and waste stations, walking trail and benches. The site has vehicular access from 18th Street and pedestrian access from Heritage Trail, along with adequate parking.
