Two separate crashes happening within hours of each other near the same location on I-70 West brought traffic to a standstill near Elm Grove throughout much of the morning and early afternoon Wednesday.

No injuries were reported in either incident, according to Wheeling Police Public Information Officer Philip Stahl, who said the first crash involving two tractor trailers occurred just before 10 a.m., while a second crash involving three semi-trucks occurred in the same area near Exit 5 at Elm Grove just a short time later around 11:45 a.m.

"The fire department was dispatched, but nobody was hurt or needed medical assistance. ... We had to shut the lanes down for a while to get everything cleaned up," said Stahl.

Traffic backed up past the Cabela Drive exit at The Highlands, Stahl said, as it took emergency crews nearly an hour to clear the scene. Several Wheeling Police units were dispatched to the scene to assist with traffic control. Many motorists used U.S. 40 West as a detour to bypass the crash scene.

Emergency personnel removed debris from the roadway of one of the semi-trucks involved in the late morning crash, as it sustained visible damage to the front bumper and left fender area. No other information was available. The Wheeling Police Department continues to investigate both crashes.
