Summer Event Schedule Packed in Moundsville

Coming off a sedate 2020 season, Moundsville’s Arts and Culture Commission has a slate of events coming to fill out the summer months.

At Tuesday’s council meeting, Sara Wood, the commission’s chairperson, announced a litany of events the city is holding across July and August, beginning July 1. Wood later said that the commission was elated to be able to return to live programming after last year.

“We are thrilled to be able to return to in-person events,” Wood said. “… We had a really successful 2019 with in-person events, and we had to alter the delivery method in the ways we offered events in 2020. Luckily, we have a lot of really creative individuals, so we were able to think outside the box and still offer events at a virtual or drive-thru capacity. But, we’re so excited to get back to full, in-person (events). … We have a lot of different artistic and cultural genres happening this year.”

July 1 will see Shakespeare in the Park come to Riverfront Park at 7 p.m., consisting of live theatre. The Vintage Theatre Company will be adapting the Bard’s Twelfth Night. This event is free of charge.

“That is live, music theater. It is a group of individuals from across the state of West Virginia that are performing. They’re a traveling group,” Wood said.

The first Wednesday of every month is Wander Out Wednesday, where live music will be held on Jefferson Avenue from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with July’s act being Mark Palmer, along with food trucks. Food trucks will also return on the third Wednesday of the month, without musical accompaniment.

Later in the summer, Jefferson Fridays will return; it’s a recurring evening event with live music, food trucks, a beer garden, and extended shopping hours at businesses on Jefferson Avenue. Wood said that Moundsville was lacking a “First Fridays” style event, and wanted to bring it to the city.

“Our group thought, ‘Moundsville could have this, we just need a group of people who want to put this on,’ So we had our first event in 2019, we shut down Jefferson Avenue from Second to Third streets, … and we were able to bring over 800 people to Jefferson Avenue. The shops stayed open late, it was a great experience and a successful community event.”

Jefferson Fridays are scheduled for Aug. 13, Sept. 17, and Oct. 8.

The Appalachian Cookbook is an ongoing project, for which the commission is accepting recipes through Aug. 15. The Appalachian Cookbook is a collection of local family recipes, ranging from “Easy Pepperoni Rolls” to Rhubarb Cake, “Undercover Meatloaf,” Violet Jelly and Applesauce Cake. The Commission is looking for recipes that have been handed down in families, represent the area’s culture, are a family favorite, and more. They are also interested in recipes that were handwritten or which have a story behind them.

Recipes may be submitted by email at artsandculture@cityofmoundsville.com or by mail to City of Moundsville Arts & Culture Commission, 800 6th Street, Moundsville, WV 26041.

“Food is an integral part of Appalachian culture. We have dishes and foods that are native to our area and that mean something to our families. We bond over food, develop new ideas over food, and laugh and engage with family and friends over food. With this cookbook, we want to provide a space for individuals to dig into their family cookbooks and share recipes that elicit emotions and stories of their family history and culture. We want to hear those recipes and stories, and we want to showcase them,” the commission stated in a release.
