It has been two weeks since Ohio County Schools issued a 30-day mask mandate, and the number of students quarantined has dramatically decreased since then, Superintendent Kim Miller reported Monday.

Miller updated board of education members on the current COVID figures in the schools.

"I am happy to report today we have had a steady decline in the number of quarantines since the mask mandate began on Sept. 14," she said. "On Sept. 16, we had 559 students in quarantine. Today… we have 126 students in quarantine."

There have been 225 COVID cases among students to date, and 15 cases among staff members, Miller said.

The school district's online COVID dashboard found on their website at boe.ohio.k12.wv.us details the number of COVID cases per school.

It lists the Warwood School as having 17 positive cases, and Wheeling Park High School having seven. Three each are listed at Triadelphia Middle School and Ritchie Elementary School; two each at Elm Grove and Middle Creek elementaries; and one case each at Bethlehem Elementary and Woodsdale Elementary. There are no reported COVID cases listed for Bridge Street Middle School, Madison Elementary, Steenrod Elementary, West Liberty Elementary or Wheeling Middle School.

In other matters before the board on Monday, the dedication of WPHS's new athletic field won't take place as planned as part of homecoming parade festivities on Wednesday. The parade was initially set to end on the field with the dedication to follow.

The field is practically complete, according to David Crum, director of operations for Ohio County Schools, and also Sean Doyle, a field representative for McKinley and Associates.

But American Electric Power still needs to run electrical lines to the field, they said. In addition, some asphalting needs to be completed on the road leading to the field.

The paving of the road leading to the field will be the last thing to be completed, they said.

The board will next meet at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 at a location to be announced.
