WHEELING -- The Ohio County Adult Learning Center has earned distinction as one of the best in West Virginia. The center was named the 2020 Adult Education Program of the Year at the recent West Virginia Adult Education Association professional development conference.
Each year, the state's Adult Education Association honors a full-time and a part-time program which has excelled in areas like enrollment, contact and distance education hours, percentage of measures met, serving those most in need, EFL completion, retention and obtaining industry recognized credentials. The work of teachers Cindy West and Marilynn Schnupp was recognized with this award.
"We strive every day to meet the individual needs of our students," West said. "This recognition from the state level validates our efforts."
Schnupp retired at the end of the 2020-2021 school year, and West has been joined by Gail Adams, former Ohio County Schools English language arts teacher and, most recently, innovation coach.
Adult Education programs provide adults with the opportunity to acquire and improve their educational and employment skills to become self-sufficient and enhance the quality of their lives and their children's, assist in transitioning to postsecondary education and training, the workforce and job market or to provide literacy services in English language acquisition.
