Trunk or Treat Event Returns at Unity Center in Benwood
Children got to show off their Halloween costumes and get candy during the Unity Center's trunk or treat event held Sunday in Benwood.
The event was co-sponsored by Temple Shalom of Wheeling, with a pasta dinner provided afterward by Undo's restaurant.
Rabbi Joshua Lief said because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the center did not hold a trunk or treat last fall, but was able to provide a meal.
"While Halloween is not a Jewish holiday, the idea of sharing our blessings with our neighbors certainly is a Jewish value," he said. "Helping the sick, feeding the hungry, and supporting our neighbors -- friends and strangers alike -- is something we are honored to be able to do."
Unity Center Manager Mary Hess said the event allows people who are recovering from drug and alcohol addictions to spend quality time with their children in a safe and fun environment.
"We're happy Temple Shalom helps us put this on every year," she said.
The Unity Center, located at 4850 Eoff St., Benwood, provides help and resources to people who are recovering or in treatment. The center helps people find places to live and jobs.
It also holds meetings every day for people in need.
