Services, Free Meals Set To Honor Veterans

In appreciation of veterans and the sacrifices they have made for their country and families, some local organizations are offering free meals and holding events in their honor.
On Veterans Day, which is Nov. 11, the Wheeling Veterans Day event is slated from 11 a.m. to noon at WesBanco Arena. Organizers describe the gathering as "a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today."
The Polish American Patriot Club, 4410 Jacob St., Wheeling, is scheduled to host a free Veterans Day Breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 11. The meal is free not just for veterans, but their spouses as well.
Veterans who would like to share their memories and memorabilia with each other are being encouraged to do so. They can also bring photos, dog tags, medals and IDs. The PAP will also offer a 25-cent discount on drinks to veterans that day.

A Veterans Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the All Wars Memorial on the grounds of the Marshall County Courthouse lawn.
The guest speaker will be Bob Blazer, past State Commander of the Sons of the American Legion and Master of Ceremonies for the Marshall County Veterans Day and Memorial Day Programs for the past 14 years. Blazer is a lifelong resident of Marshall County.
The Moundsville Middle School Band will perform the National Anthem and additional music. Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from Troop 78 will perform a skit and help with the ceremony, while the Moundsville Veterans Honor Guard will present "Taps" and the 21-gun salute.
All area veterans and the public are invited to attend.
The Belmont County Veterans Service Office in Bellaire will be celebrating veterans next week with several meals starting at 11 a.m.: Today will be Hot Dog and Nacho Bar Day. Wednesday will be a sitdown lunch for veterans only.
The service office will be closed on Thursday in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.
The Ohio River Valley Elks Lodge in Martins Ferry is slated to hold its annual Veterans Turkey Dinner from 4-7 p.m. Nov. 13. The dinner is free for all veterans, and guests can pay $5. The meal includes turkey and dressing, mashed and sweet potatoes, corn, cranberries or applesauce, rolls and the lodge's "special dessert bar."
