Robert Newhart will retain his seat as mayor of Shadyside defeating his challenger during Tuesday's general election, according to unofficial vote totals.

Newhart captured 711 votes, while Greg Givens garnered 135 votes.

Newhart said he wanted to thank the voters for choosing him again.

"I appreciate the people's trust and I will do the utmost to see it remains unbroken," Newhart said.

Newhart's four-year term will begin Jan. 1. He has been mayor for 15 years.

For the village council race, voters were asked to choose six people among eight candidates. The top vote getters were John Ferrelli with 541 votes; Robert Gorrell, 531; Louis Meintel, 526; Melanie Haswell, 479; Kevin Tomlinson, 215. The sixth person is a write-in candidate. There were two write-in candidates this election: Timothy Merryman and Brandon Parr. At press time, there were a total of 641 votes cast between them, but those votes had to be counted by hand since they were write-ins.

Depending on how these votes are split among the write-in candidates it could change the results regarding Tomlinson. Election officials were still counting the write-in candidate votes at press time.

Candidate Carol Givens lost her bid to win a seat, capturing the fewest votes at 128.
