Nailers Way Relocation Begins in Downtown Wheeling

Preparations are underway for the $400,000 Nailers Way relocation project.

Workers with Savage Construction Co. of Wheeling were busy Monday morning getting the site ready, which includes a surface lot between Nailers Way and Main Street in downtown.

Workers Neal Soles, Mike Breitinger and Mike Rogerson were cutting down an old utility pole at the entrance of the surface parking lot that will eventually be used to help form a four-way intersection.

The project is part of the ongoing Downtown Streetscape Project, which has involved the replacement of waterlines in the downtown in advance of sidewalk replacements, lighting upgrades and repaving on Main and Market streets.

Savage Construction Co. was the low bidder for the relocation project at $400,585. Nailers Way, formerly known as South Street, is located between WesBanco Arena and the rear of the Robert C. Byrd Intermodal Transportation Center.

Ron Blatt, general manager and project manager with Savage Construction Co., said workers are preparing to demolish existing portions of the lot. The current surface will be ground down so new pavement can be installed. He noted the new pavement may not be laid until the weather warms again, however.

Blatt noted the design plan includes some parking to still be made available at the surface lot, just not as much as there is now. People who rent spaces in the lot have been directed to park in the neighboring Intermodal during the work. Temporary barrier fencing was also installed Monday to keep motorists and pedestrians out of the parking area.
