Moundsville Pharmacy Says It’s Giving 100 COVID-19 Tests Daily

MOUNDSVILLE — The Moundsville Pharmacy is now testing about 100 people per day for COVID-19 since it started offering free PCR testing on Dec. 1, said pharmacist and owner Jason Turner.

He noted 25% to 30% of those tested end up with a positive COVID test on most days.

Turner said the pharmacy, located at 118 Lafayette Ave., Moundsville, had been offering rapid testing for several months, but since partnering with Roxby Labs in Wheeling they have offered free PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing.

The pharmacy began testing a dozen or more people per day, but that number has increased since the holidays.

“The testing is provided through state funding. We receive an administrative fee, but the testing is all free to any patient,” he said, noting there is no state residency requirement.

“Patients are testing for a variety of reasons. They are experiencing symptoms or some have been exposed to a friend or family member experiencing symptoms or have tested positive. Some need it in order to return to work or school,” he said, adding others have needed tests for travel or even attending a concert.

Others have weekly protocols they must adhere to for their workplaces. And still others want to know if they’re negative before being around other family members, he added.

“We’re seeing a mix of patients who are vaccinated and unvaccinated. We know there are breakthrough cases; their symptoms are less and they’re trying to determine if they have a cold, sniffles or COVID. They don’t want to spread it to other family members,” Turner said.

Testing is conducted outside in designated parking places at the pharmacy. Testing is available from 9-5 p.m Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. People can request the testing by going through the pharmacy’s drive-through first.

“Because of the holiday surge we’ve been promoting it more. … The testing has really been in high demand the last couple weeks,” he said, adding they are testing people of all ages.

The samples are tested at Roxby Labs in Wheeling and results are sent to the patient via email within 12 to 48 hours, he said.

“We counsel patients on the next steps to take if they are positive,” Turner added.
