Storm Leads to Downed Lines, Tornado Warnings
Wheeling firefighters responded to a few calls during Wednesday’s thunderstorm that featured at times high gusts of wind.
Philip Stahl, spokesman for the Wheeling Fire Department, said Thursday that firefighters did have some work to do during the storm that resulted in tornado warnings for much of the Ohio Valley.
“The fire department did respond to a few downed wires yesterday evening – one was in the area of 30th and Jacob streets where a pole was falling over from the wind,” he said. “They also responded to the area of Northern Parkway and Mount Wood Road for wires down.”
The storm just happened to occur during West Virginia’s Flood Safety and Severe Weather Awareness Week, which was observed this week.
Gov. Jim Justice proclaimed March 21-25 as Flood Safety and Severe Weather Awareness Week in the state.
The goal of the week is to help people be informed about the types of severe weather they can experience across the state. People are also encouraged to make a disaster-related plan, build a disaster kit and to volunteer, if needed, according to Ready.WV.gov.
During Wednesday’s storm, Ohio Valley residents took to social media posting photos of what was happening in their neighborhoods. Tornado warnings were issued for the valley and some people captured images of funnel clouds forming in the sky in various locations.
There were no reports of actual tornadoes touching down in the area, but high winds did do some minor damage.
