The Gabriel Project of West Virginia is celebrating 25 years of helping local families in the state at their home office in Wheeling today.
The Gabriel Project's "Silver Jubilee" - happening at the McClure House Hotel at 1200 Market St. - celebrates the quarter-century anniversary at the place that started it all. A day of lighthearted contests, raffles, games and more will include appearances from local personalities. As of Wednesday, more than 150 RSVPs have been made, and a registration table will be open the day of for those who want to drop in and join.
Northern Panhandle Chapter Coordinator Faith Hicks said the event may be held at the Wheeling location, but represents the collective work achieved at the 26 locations founded statewide since their inception.
The Gabriel Project helps provide immediate assistance to pregnant women and families of children under age 2 who are in need. They offer free items like diapers, wipes and clothing and also provides beds, cribs and car seats for a minimal fee.
"Twenty-five years ago, Gabriel Project got its start here in Wheeling, so we're celebrating back in our Wheeling area, but this is for the whole state," she said. "… We're thrilled."
The jubilee will begin at 11:15, where opening remarks will be offered by Tina Morris and Pastor Deborah Gable. Games will begin at noon and continue through 2 p.m., while raffles will be available all day, including one for anyone who brings diapers to donate and a baby photo raffle. A kid's corner will be open to provide games for kids, with food, drinks and snacks provided.
"Honestly, it's just grown, but it all started here in Wheeling," Hicks added. "We now have 26 locations, we serve babies through two-year-olds, and we're seeing a high need of items currently, because of the current economic conditions.
"I always end up saying this, but we count our blessings."
