Two Wellsburg homes were a total loss after several fire departments spent hours Thursday trying to extinguish the blaze on Main Street.
Around 1:30 p.m., firefighters were called to the 1300 block of Main Street, said Franklin Community Volunteer Fire Chief Gerald McClain. There they found two homes engulfed in flames. They heard that, originally, there were five people trapped in the fire, but once they arrived, they found that everyone had escaped without injury.
Crews worked to knock down the fire for more than two hours, McClain said. McClain said firefighters did not yet know as of Thursday afternoon which house the fire started in. There was a propane tank in the back of one of the houses on fire, but McClain said fire crews weren't sure if that had anything to do with the fire.
One firefighter injured his finger and was taken to the hospital. Firefighters from Wellsburg, Franklin, Follansbee, Hooverson Heights and McKinleyville all helped battle the fire.
