Minerva High School Student Dies After Accident
A teenager from Minerva High School died following an accident in the wake of a track meet Saturday.
Owen Matthew Grubb and other student-athletes reportedly attempted to knock over a dead tree. The tree fell on Grubb, 16, of Minerva, Ohio. He was badly injured, according to Cambridge police. A police report states first responders arrived quickly after receiving reports that a young man had been injured.
Tamara Gibson, a coach and teacher at Cambridge City Schools, said several athletes had been “cooling off in the woods” near the high school after competing in a track meet at Cambridge High School.
First responders observed severe trauma around Grubb’s head, as well as a fractured arm. They attempted rescue breathing using a suction device to clear his occluded airway.
Personnel from the Cambridge Fire Department arrived on scene, then the Cassell Station Volunteer Fire Department arrived and assisted in treating and preparing Grubb for transport.
The accident occurred south of the footbridge spanning Wills Creek and a little more than 100 feet east of the paved portion of the walking trail. Olivia Scott, the track and field coach for Minerva High School, spoke to investigators with a student who was present during the accident.
The four athletes, including Grubb, were reportedly attempting to knock down a dead, leaning tree and all four of the athletes were either sitting on, pulling, or pushing the tree. Grubb was apparently pushing the tree when it snapped and fell. He reportedly began to run to avoid being struck but was hit by the falling tree.
The athletes have reportedly found and thrown logs or trees off the bridge and into the water for the past couple of years in what had become a tradition.
Grubb was treated in the emergency room at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, where he was stabilized. He was then flown to Akron Children’s Hospital by Medflight. He was in stable condition when Medflight departed the helipad, but died later Saturday.
Capt. David Peoples of the Cambridge Police Department confirmed Grubb died. He said the case is closed and ruled an accident, and no charges against anyone involved are being considered.
Grubb, a junior in high school, was a member of the cross country team, track and choir.
The cross country teams had won District II championships that Saturday.
