Wheeling Police Make Arrest Following Vehicle Chase

After responding to an alleged battery incident, Wheeling Police arrested a man Wednesday night after a vehicular pursuit that lasted from Chapline Street to the Fulton area.

Husam Alkahtani, 31, was arrested on several counts, including battery, destruction of property, fleeing while driving under the influence, defrauding an innkeeper and leaving the scene of an accident.

At a little after 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to a WPD release, officers were dispatched to Carins Pub on Chapline Street for a report of a disorder. After arriving on the scene, officers observed a vehicle pulling off of the street near the bar and allegedly driving in an erratic manner.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and the suspect allegedly sped off to flee. Officers initially terminated the pursuit due to it entering a residential neighborhood, but reinitiated the pursuit after observing the suspect allegedly crash into a parked vehicle and continue on recklessly.

Officers coordinated a precision stop using STOP stick tire deflation devices along National Road in the Fulton area. The vehicle became disabled and stopped shortly after where the suspect was taken into custody in the Perkins parking lot.

Alkahtani allegedly provided a Wheeling address, but showed officers a New York operator’s license. Alkahtani was transported to the Northern Regional Jail. There were no injuries involved with this incident.

In an unrelated arrest around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aaron Dwayne Payne II, 32, of Wheeling, was arrested on charges of burglary, being a fugitive from justice (an outstanding warrant from Belmont County, Ohio), and possession of a firearm while being prohibited.

According to WPD, officers were dispatched to a disorder call, possibly involving a firearm in the 100 block of Virginia Street. Upon arriving and subsequent investigation, officers arrested Payne. There were no injuries during this incident that involved multiple subjects in a couple of apartment units.

Payne was transported to the Northern Regional Jail awaiting arraignment.
