Cockayne House Hosting Several Christmas Events

GLEN DALE - To kick off the holiday season, organizers once again will decorate the Cockayne Farmstead in Glen Dale to bring to life four different eras and welcome all to the Christmas Open House.

The Cockayne Farmhouse will be decorated to reflect on Christmases past. Interpreters in period dress representing the four generations of Cockayne children to live in the house will lead guests through the Christmas celebrations of four different eras, offering a personal glimpse into the lives of the Cockayne family.

Christmas with the Cockaynes tours will take place from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 8 and 2-4 p.m. Dec. 11 with tours beginning every 15 minutes. Tours will last about a half-hour. Tickets will be $8 for adults but free for children 12 and younger. Marshall County Historical Society members will receive discounted admission.

Then on Dec. 18, guests can experience both the sights and sounds of the season at the annual Christmas Concert featuring local band Faire May. In the late 19th century, the five Cockayne sisters were known for their love of music and their skill in performing it. The concert will feature Christmas favorites and historical pieces found in the farmstead's collection that would have been played by the Cockaynes themselves.

Faire May recently was named overall champion at Valley’s Got Talent, and have added new songs, new instruments, new members, and new harmonies for their acoustic performance.

The concert will be performed twice: a daytime showing at 3 p.m. and a candlelight concert at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance by calling the Farmstead at 304-845-1411 or stopping in to the Visitor Center.
