The First English Lutheran Church built in 1897 in downtown Wheeling is newly listed for sale for $445,000.

WHEELING – A historic church built in 1897 is for sale in downtown Wheeling with an asking price of $445,000.

First English Lutheran Church, located at 35 16th St., is for sale with real estate agent Lee C. Paull of Paull Associates of Wheeling.

The church’s pastor, the Rev. Bill Ridenhour, declined to comment on Wednesday.

Paull said the church is in great shape, has three floors, an elevator and 14 parking spaces in its own parking lot.

“It’s a classic and is built like a fort. It’s in excellent condition,” Paull said.

A marquee on the outside of the First English Lutheran Church in downtown Wheeling is shown on Wednesday. The 1897 church is newly listed for sale for $445,000.

He noted since the building has an elevator and its own parking lot it could be used for a variety of purposes. For example, since there is an elevator each floor could be occupied by three different tenants.

“The church has been kept up very nicely and it doesn’t need much of anything,” Paull said. “It’s in a great location in downtown Wheeling. The architecture is amazing.”

There is also a full kitchen and each floor has bathrooms.

“It has a lot of nice rooms. I would probably create a common area where the elevator gets off at each floor,” Paull said.

“There are two new boilers and the woodwork is in great shape. It’s ready to go and the price is right. If a building like this was in downtown Pittsburgh, it would cost a couple million dollars.”

The First English Lutheran Church also features a parking lot with 14 spaces for vehicles.

Paull believes the building could even be turned into apartments if a contractor could do the necessary buildouts.

“It could be a multi-use building. The elevator gives a lot of options – it’s a game changer,” he said. “If a company wanted to have a place where a lot of people can meet, it has nice-sized rooms.”

A plaque on the First English Lutheran Church notes it was established in 1897.

Starting at $2.99/week.
