MOUNDSVILLE -- The winners of this year's Christmas House Decorating Contest in Moundsville have been announced.
Judging took place Dec. 10 by Councilman Eugene Saunders and his wife Ellen. The winners include first place, Zach Smith, 1200 Fourth St.; second place, Denny Phillips, 250 Curtis Ave.; and third place, Brian McCulley, 209 Cypress Ave.
The first, second or third place prize amounts were $100, $50 and $25, respectively.
Saunders said it was tough judging the houses this year as there were so many that were nicely decorated. He noted there were 12 houses to judge this season; people had to register their houses to be judged.
Saunders and his wife drove to all the locations, took notes and decided on the top three winners.
"We drove around three times. We wanted to make sure we did a good job," he said.
"The first place winners, they really outdid themselves. They decorated the garage, the upstairs and downstairs, the bushes."
The winners are being invited to be honored during the next Moundsville City Council meeting set for 6 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers at the municipal building.
"Thanks to everyone who participated, and everyone who decorates for Christmas, all helping to make the city very festive for Christmas," Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy said Wednesday.
In addition to the decorating contest, the city's other holiday activities have included the annual Christmas parade, a free Christmas party at the Four Seasons pool was slated to be held Wednesday night, and a Christmas party for city employees was held during the day Wednesday at the Moundsville Volunteer Fire Department building.
And on Saturday, the Moundsville Arts & Culture Commission's annual Christmas on the Avenue is slated from 5-8 p.m. at Fifth and Jefferson Avenues.
It will feature a variety of free activities such as horse and carriage rides, train rides, cookie decorating and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus.
