Blessed Martin de Porres Catholic School was open from 1942-55 for African American children in East Wheeling who desired a Catholic education. Religious women from the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph taught and administered the school. Former students at the school also were on hand to witness a blessing of the statue and a dedication of a plaque honoring all those who attended the school.
