Lenten Season Begins Wednesday: A Guide to Local Fish Frys

With Ash Wednesday at hand to kick off the Lenten Season, Ohio Valley residents will be seeking out their favorite fish frys. Golden brown fish on white bread, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, cabbage and noodles … the possibilities are many each Friday.

Here is a list of many of the local fish frys set to start beginning Wednesday, or in some cases Friday.

Ohio County

Saint Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wheeling will hold its annual Lenten Fish Fry beginning Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, and every Friday during Lent in the parish gym, 2111 Market St., Wheeling. Eat-in and takeout orders will be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Downtown local delivery will be offered from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 304-905-6589 to order.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Ukrainian Catholic Church, 4136 Jacob St. in South Wheeling, will be hosting its annual fish fry from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. beginning Friday and running each Friday through Lent.

The Stone Church Volunteer Fire Department, 621 Stone Church Road, Wheeling, will be having its Lenten Fish Fries starting Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, and every Friday of Lent from 4-7 p.m. The menu will include fish sandwiches and sides of fries, cole slaw, green beans or macaroni and cheese, homemade pierogies, hush puppies and onion rings. Pop and water will also be available. Orders will be for eat-in or takeout. Call ahead (304-243-1571) to order.

Marshall County

St. John Catholic Church, 700 Main St., Benwood. The St. John Rosary Altar Society will hold a Lenten Fish Fry from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. starting Ash Wednesday then every Friday until April 7. Eat in or carry out. Call for delivery, 304-905-8036. Menu includes Canadian white fish sandwich, french fries, pierogis, cabbage & noodles, pasta pesto, cole slaw, macaroni & cheese.

St. Jude Church will host February fish fries 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, and then on Fridays. The church is located at 826 Jefferson Ave. Call 304-845-2646.

The Sherrard Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fish fry starting Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent. Call 304-233-9830 for takeout.

Knights of Columbus Council No. 12915, Mount Olivet, will be holding its annual Lenten fish fry starting on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, and on every Friday for the following six weeks. The fish fry will take place from 3-6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace School gymnasium on Mount Olivet Road in Mount Olivet. Meals will be available for dine-in or carry-out.

Belmont County

The Martins Ferry Knights of Columbus will hold a Lenten fish fry 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and each Friday of Lent at 25 N. Fourth St. .

Shadyside St. Mary Church fish fry is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays, 350 E 40th St. Call 740-340-5061.

The Sons of Italy, Bellaire, will hold fish frys from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 3348 Belmont St. Call 740-676-7137.

The Flushing Volunteer Fire Department will hold its first fish fry 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent at 104 E High St. Call 740-968-4700.

The Wolfhurst Fire Department started its fish frys last week and will continue 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday and Fridays through Lent. The location is 55485 Brand Ave, Bridgeport. Call 740-635-3192.

The Sardis Volunteer Fire Department fish frys are from 4-7 p.m. starting Friday. The location is 37286 Muskingum St. Call 740-483-1048

The Barnesville Elks Lodge will hold a fish fry from 5-8:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday. The location is 117 N Chestnut St. Call 740-425-9181.

The St. Clairsville American Legion will hold a fish fry from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ash Wednesday and every Friday through Lent. The location is 100 Legion Road. Call 740-695-9010.

The St. Clairsville Fraternal Order of Eagles will hold a fish fry from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ash Wednesday and every Friday through Lent. The location is 50690 National Road East. Call 740-695-9164.

The Bellaire Fire Station will hold a special fish fry benefit for the medical expenses of Spirit of ’76 Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jim Tharp from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 26 at 2450 Belmont St.

Brooke County

Windsor Heights Volunteer Fire Department – Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call ahead 304-394-5033. Delivery is based upon availability.
