By JOSELYN KING 3 min read

"Spring Clean Up" starts this week in Ohio County communities, with garbage dumpsters set to come to local neighborhoods during the next two months.

The Ohio County Solid Waste Authority is organizing the clean-up effort, which kicks off Wednesday at Warwood Garden Park, 1301 Richland Ave., Warwood. The second event is set for Friday at Wheeling Island Belle Isle, 778 North Front St.

All of the clean-up events take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the scheduled days. The list of additional locations and dates for collections are as follows:

– March 31: South Wheeling, 3434 Market St.

– April 1: Valley Grove, 11248 National Road

– April 5: Bethlehem Ballfield, 76 Village Drive

– April 14: Old Wheeling dog pound, Industrial Drive and Peninsula Street

– April 15: West Liberty Christian Church, 742 Van Meter Way

– April 21: East Wheeling, 58 19th St.

– April 29: Clearview Community Center, 166 Clearview Ave.

– May 5: Pleasanton Playground:, 1092 Currie Drive

– May 6: Stone Church VFD, 621 Stone Church Road

– May 12: Elm Grove Patterson Ballfield, 50 Patterson Ave.

– May 13: Triadelphia Town Building, 7453 National Road.

The event is open to Ohio County residents only, though they are not limited to the clean-up event set for their neighborhood, explained Rebecca Friend, director of the Ohio County Solid Waste Authority. Ohio County residents are permitted to bring items to more than one site if they so wish.

"Any resident is welcome to utilize any location," Friend said. If the one in their neighborhood doesn't work for them, they can come to another."

Dumpster sites will be continuously monitored during the clean-up times. All items must be landfill appropriate, and no tires or hazardous material will be accepted, she said.

Friend also encourages the public to look at their items and determine if any are still usable or worthy of donation to a local charity before they are discarded.

"Last year we noticed a lot of good items that could have been donated to thrift stores or places like Goodwill," she said. "When we can divert goods from going into the landfill, we want to do so."

Unusable appliances will be accepted provided they do not contain refrigerant, Friend said. Also taken in will be scrap metal - so long as a magnet will stick to it, hard plastics, Christmas lights, junk mail, cardboard, newspapers, aluminum and filmy plastic bags.

For every 500 pounds of plastic bags collected by the county the Trex Company will donate a park bench made of composite, and so far 38 benches have been received in Ohio County, according to Friend.

She thanked in advance employees with the city of Wheeling and other municipalities who will be helping with the unloading of items.
