Marshall County Schools Names Service Personnel, Teacher of the Year

Marshall County Schools’ top teacher and top service worker were named along with nominees for the honors during Tuesday's board of education meeting.
The meeting was held at the Delf Norona Museum in Moundsville to accommodate the crowd.
Heather Markonich, a media library aide at Sherrard Middle School, was named the Marshall County Schools Service Personnel of the Year.
Bricie Brannan, a Sherrard Middle School STEM teacher, was named the Marshall County Schools Teacher of the Year.
Markonich said following the ceremony that she was honored to receive the award.
"It's such an honor to be recognized by the staff at Sherrard Middle School," Markonich said. "Sherrard is a great place to work. We work as a team there. Just to see all the students succeed there every day is really rewarding."
Following the ceremony, Brannan said she was "a little shocked" to receive the honor.
"There were a lot of good teachers who were really deserving," Brannan said. "I knew the competition."
Brannan said she enjoys teaching because of the connections she develops with the students.
"I just love them. I think they're funny. I like hearing their stories. I like when they learn something and come and run and tell you they remembered it in another class," she said.
Other nominees for the awards also were recognized and received certificates as well.

Nominees are voted on by a school's respective employees. Afterward a committee consisting of previous winners and county office officials interviews the nominees and chooses the top teacher and top service worker.
