MOUNDSVILLE -- Construction of the city of Moundsville's new municipal and safety building is expected to be partially delayed by about two months due to some issues with a section of concrete.

City Manager Rick Healy said during recent testing of concrete samples it was discovered there were some non-compliant levels in a footer.

"Standard protocol is that samples of all concrete are taken for testing at the time of delivery. These samples are tested at different intervals as the concrete samples cure," he said.

"Additional core samples were taken. These samples were found to be inconsistent with the level required by the engineer.

"Therefore to ensure quality standards, certain areas will need to be removed and replaced."

Healy added that the removal of the concrete will involve having to dismantle some of the already constructed areas.

"While disappointed in the upcoming delay, it is important to note that this will not result in any additional cost to the city," he said.

"We will only accept 100 percent quality construction in this building, and we are thankful that the fault was found before any additional work was completed."

He noted work can still continue on non-impacted areas of the site, though the concrete portion will be delayed by about two months.

The $12.475 million project is being paid by proceeds of the city's 1% Municipal Sales Tax. The general contractor on the project is &build.
