Carmel Road in front of Alpha Tavern was closed Monday evening as Wheeling firefighters battled a blaze at a town home located at the corner of Birch Avenue and South Park Street. The fire was reported by a passerby just after 8 p.m., and no one was inside the home at the time, according to Philip Stahl, public information officer for the Wheeling police and fire departments.
