Former Students, Teachers Invited to Walk Through Old Sand Hill Elementary

DALLAS -- Former students and staff at Sand Hill Elementary School are being given the chance to visit the facility one last time before construction of a new building begins this summer.
One last walk-through of the school is slated from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, May 21.
"We will be closing a special chapter in so many of our lives and embarking on a new journey with our new school building construction beginning this summer," said Sand Hill Elementary School Principal Krenna Allender.
"Take one last walk through the school, share memories with friends, teachers, staff, former staff and students, and more.
"You'll get to leave your very own special mark on the school, create lasting memories, and hear about future plans. Please help us to share with all past, present, and future Cardinals. We can't forget our Cobras, too. We hope to see you there."
Allender said people can leave their handprints and signatures on the school building. A photo memory banner will then be created and shared.
She noted the original class bell will be used at the new school. During the event, titled "School's Out Forever," people are encouraged to bring and share photos from the past.
Allender said the school wanted to hold this event for the public because it was "supported, loved, and founded in the Dallas/Sand Hill community."
"It is only fitting that our community be here as we close this special chapter in so many of our lives and embark on a new journey with the new school building construction beginning this Summer 2023," she said.
"All are invited to take a last walk through the school, share memories, and leave their special mark."
Marshall County Schools Superintendent Shelby Haines said the project to build the new school will be advertised for bids the second week of June; construction is expected to begin shortly after.
"The Sand Hill School was a project on the new levy that goes into effect July 1, 2023, because the current school needs significant upgrades from basic utility service feeds to safety and security," Haines said.
"Currently, the school is housed in four separate buildings and the new school will be one unit.
"The school board approved using a modular classroom for the timeline of construction which is estimated to be 18 months," she added. "This modular unit will then be sold to recoup some of the cost, just as some of the current infrastructure will be.
"The initial plan was to build in phases so that instruction could continue in other existing buildings; however, after assessing the current utility infrastructure that was not feasible."
Sand Hill currently has 51 students in grades K-5.
