The Friends of Wheeling, in partnership with Boy Scout Troop 6, Stone Church VFD, and Engineered Foundation Solutions, will meet from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday for a work session at Stone Church Cemetery.
Friends of Wheeling Board member Peggy Niebergall, as well as AmeriCorps member Sharon David, will head up the work day.
"This will be the third work session at Stone Church Cemetery so far, but we are planning another work day this fall," Niebergall said. "We could never be able to do these events without the dedication of Boy Scout Troop 6, Stone Church VFD, Engineered Foundation Solutions, the City of Wheeling, generous donations and grants from the Ohio County Commissioners and Wheeling Heritage, and most of all the numerous volunteers."
The work will be divided into three groups, Niebergall said. First will be the resetting of headstones which requires the help of heavy equipment and muscle. The second group will be those who want to clean the headstones with water and a bio-degradable solution called D-2. The third group will be people who would like to search for the Civil War veterans' burial sites.
Once the burial site is found, there will be a form, designed by Sharon David, to fill out listing the veteran's name and other information as well as the GPS location of the site. A white rose and American flag will then be placed on the burial site.
"As far as we know, there are 150 Civil War Veterans, including a nurse, interred," Niebergall said. "The day starts at 9 but volunteers can come and go anytime during the work day.
Lunch and water will be provided by Friends of Wheeling.
Parking is available at Padden Financial Services and James Taylor, CPA parking lot and along the road. Volunteers are asked to bring safety glasses or sunglasses, garden gloves, and a folding chair.
"Last year we had over 50 volunteers," Niebergall said, "and we hope to see all of them again."
