Cockayne Farmstead in Glen Dale Plans West Virginia Day Events

The historic Cockayne Farmstead is offering free tours and more today to celebrate West Virginia Day.
The celebration of the state's 160th birthday is being held during the farmstead's regular business hours, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
In addition to tours of the historic home, located at 1105 Wheeling Ave., Glen Dale, people can also see and take part in some demonstrations such as candle making.
Woodworker Rich Beekman will be demonstrating how to carve wood into spoons. Basketmaker Patricia Mercer will demonstrate her basket-weaving craft. And Noah Thomas will demonstrate blacksmithing.
Musician Laura Cramblet will be playing her hammered dulcimer, which is a percussion instrument with strings. The strings are hit with a kind of mallet called a hammer.
"I think we have a cool variety of crafters for people to check out," said Kara Gordon, site manager for the Cockayne Farmstead.
"I think it will be a good way to experience first-hand what life in West Virginia was like in the past.
"We have such a unique heritage in our state that I think we should be proud of, and that's what we're trying to celebrate with West Virginia Day."
Also in celebration of the birthday, the Marshall County Public Library and Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex are hosting a scavenger hunt today.
The scavenger hunt, which is being held all day, takes place all through the city; prizes must be claimed at the library by 6:30 p.m. People can pick up their hunt package at the mound complex and then once completed take it to the library.
The mound complex is also holding screenings of the documentary "West Virginia: A Film History."
