City of Wheeling Pools Wrapping Up Seasons

WHEELING -- As the summer months wind down, the City of Wheeling pools will see a change in operating hours beginning Sunday.

The last day of the season's operation for Grandview pool -- Wheeling Heights; 36th Street pool -- South Wheeling; and Garden Park pool -- Warwood will be Sunday, Aug. 13. The Bridge Park pool -- Wheeling Island, will remain open on Saturdays and Sundays only with the last day of operation being Sunday, Sept. 3.

Citizens Police Academy

WHEELING -- For the first time in four years, the Wheeling Police Department is restarting and now accepting applications for itsCitizens Police Academy (CPA). The CPA is set to begin on August 30, with classes being held weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. at Wheeling Police Headquarters -- 2115 Chapline Street in Center Wheeling.

Applications can be obtained online at wheelingwv.gov/cpa or at the front desk of the Wheeling Police Department. The application deadline is Aug. 21, 2023, however, should there not be enough participants, those who apply this fall will be able to take part in a spring class.

The Citizens Police Academy is a 13-week program that gives the public an opportunity to have a unique insiders' perspective on law enforcement and become closely acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the department and its many divisions, units, staff and volunteers.

During the course, participants will have a front row seat and hands-on interactions on various policing topics. Speakers include local professionals in the criminal justice field including police officers on the local and federal levels, prosecutors, attorneys, and victims' advocates. Additionally, participants will take field trips to the Northern Regional Jail, the City-County Building, take part in a police ride along and try out many new features at the department's new headquarters, including a firearms simulator.

Qualified applicants must be at least 18 years old, of good moral character and pass a background check. There is no cost to participate in this program, however there is a limit to the number of participants.

One Arrested, Two Cited

On Drug Charges

WHEELING -- Three people are facing drug charges after the Wheeling Police Department arrested one and cited two others Monday.

Around 4:30 p.m. Monday, police encountered a person who allegedly appeared intoxicated in the area of 43rd and Jacob Streets. Further investigation led police to obtain a search warrant for 27-48th Street, where they allegedly located several grams of methamphetamine, crack cocaine and cocaine, as well as thousands of dollars in cash.

As a result, Janet Ewart, 63 of Wheeling was charged with possession with intent to deliver. She was taken to the Northern Regional Jail and later arraigned by an Ohio County magistrate, who set bond at $3,000.

Two other individuals were issued citations: Leslie Ann Lacey, 59 of Wheeling for possession of meth and Brian Michael Gorczyca, 39, of Wheeling for possession.
