STEUBENVILLE -- A Toronto man faces charges of felonious assault and failure to comply after allegedly firing at officers from his vehicle while being pursued from the rest area near state Route 213 to U.S. 22 in Pennsylvania early Friday.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Tyler Karhut, 27, of Toronto was found in a vehicle near the rest area at about 4:30 a.m. Troopers noted a Jefferson County warrant had been issued charging Karhut with aggravated burglary.
State troopers said when they attempted to make contact with Karhut, he failed to comply, leading them and members of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department in a pursuit along Ohio 7 to U.S. 22 and the Veterans Memorial Bridge, through West Virginia and into Pennsylvania.
They said during the chase, Karhut, who was alone in the vehicle, fired shots at them using a 9 mm pistol.
State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Bernard confirmed that for public safety, the pursuit was ended at the Pennsylvania line, and Karhut was apprehended shortly after by the McDonald Borough Police Department.
The highway patrol said no shots were fired by law enforcement officers and there were no injuries during the incident.
