Volunteer Jackie McLaughlin, left, and Lt. Candace Lawrence of the Salvation Army in Wheeling greet those participating in the Salvation Army’s golf scramble on Monday.
The Salvation Army of Wheeling prepared for the holiday season and the upcoming winter months by hitting the greens on Monday.
The Salvation Army hosted its annual golf scramble at the Wheeling Country Club just as it scrambles to find at least 100 volunteers to assist with bell ringing during its Red Kettle Drive in November and December.
The drive will take place from Nov. 18 through Dec. 23 at 16 locations throughout Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel and Tyler counties.
“We’re always looking for volunteers,” said Lt. John Lawrence of the Salvation Army in Wheeling. “This year we would like to have 100 volunteers to help us cut our overhead.”
Past years have seen the Salvation Army in Wheeling pay some volunteers to man the kettles during softer times during the week. Lawrence noted several organizations already have agreed to provide volunteers for the Red Kettle Drive.
Individuals wishing to volunteer should contact the Salvation Army office at 304-233-4400 and ask for Nathan Blake, community relations officer.
The scramble on Monday attracted teams from 11 local organizations, as well as a 12th team organized by a church member. In total, 43 golfers participated, according to Lt. Candace Lawrence with the Salvation Army.
It’s not known yet how much money was raised, as some organizations donated items or services, added Lt. John Lawrence.
But funds will be put toward general operating purposes at the Salvation Army as the organization readies for Thanksgiving, Christmas and its “Coats For Kids” program during the winter months.
The Salvation Army in Wheeling is taking online applications now from those in need of holiday food cards, and wishing to have their children’s names included on the organization’s Angel Tree this Christmas season.
The application can be accessed through at saangeltree.org, or through the Facebook page at “The Salvation Army Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel & Tyler-WV.”
In person appointments are available after Oct. 2, and those wanting to instead schedule an in-person appointment should call 304-233-4400.
